SIGHTING
On July 4, 1976, on the bicentennial birthday of the USA, my girlfriend and I were driving back to Dallas from a visit to my Grandparents in Talihina, Oklahoma. It was early afternoon as we approached the man-made lake, Ray Hubbard, on the northeast side of Dallas. The driving rain stopped and ahead of us, crossing the highway, was a real, live, twisting tornado. We, and everyone else on the highway, stopped our cars and stared ahead, transfixed. As one might imagine, pictures of a tornado don't express the naked power that you sense and the details you can see revealed in the presence of one. The green sky above the tornado was spinning like a giant drain so we were very much aware of the layers of air above. The vortex appeared unthinkably powerful and grew and lost skins of debris and water so that the funnel became thicker and thinner from moment to moment, with layers of violence spiraling out of the clouds and joining the spinning column of black air. Luckily, it was crossing our path rather than heading toward us. After it crossed the highway and headed across the lake, it lost organizational power and broke up into crazy flying curls of tornado tube segments that reeled and sputtered out in the air over the lake. It was a spectacular Bicentennial show. No one was killed. blog archives10/12/2003 - 10/18/2003 10/19/2003 - 10/25/2003 10/26/2003 - 11/01/2003 11/02/2003 - 11/08/2003 11/09/2003 - 11/15/2003 11/16/2003 - 11/22/2003 11/23/2003 - 11/29/2003 11/30/2003 - 12/06/2003 12/07/2003 - 12/13/2003 12/14/2003 - 12/20/2003 12/21/2003 - 12/27/2003 12/28/2003 - 01/03/2004 01/04/2004 - 01/10/2004 01/11/2004 - 01/17/2004 01/18/2004 - 01/24/2004 01/25/2004 - 01/31/2004 02/08/2004 - 02/14/2004 02/22/2004 - 02/28/2004 02/29/2004 - 03/06/2004 03/21/2004 - 03/27/2004 04/11/2004 - 04/17/2004 05/02/2004 - 05/08/2004 05/16/2004 - 05/22/2004 05/30/2004 - 06/05/2004 07/04/2004 - 07/10/2004 10/17/2004 - 10/23/2004 02/27/2005 - 03/05/2005 03/13/2005 - 03/19/2005 04/17/2005 - 04/23/2005 04/24/2005 - 04/30/2005 05/29/2005 - 06/04/2005 09/04/2005 - 09/10/2005 02/12/2006 - 02/18/2006 08/13/2006 - 08/19/2006 |
