Dream

Mark Newgarden was going to show us his new project having something to do with new video projection technology and sexual cues in advertising. My brother and his friend, kids about the age of ten, were in the back seat of Mark's car as we sped through the summer night on the way to the performance. The sky was very light and we could see the silhouettes of the trees by the roadside with particular clarity as they changed place and shape. The desert air, rushing in through the windows, felt wonderful on my face. I looked over at Mark and noticed two slight depressions on his forehead just above his eyebrows that I had never noticed before. I wondered if I might be seeing a physical manifestation of his lack of sense of smell. It's true that he can't smell and I wondered if those depressions might mean anything in particular. We sped on down the dark road. The night was so gorgeous. I turned to Tommy in back and said that though the whole scene was so realistic in every detail and sensation that I knew that it was a dream. The vision was unperturbed by my realization and I didn't try to alter or shorten the experience.

Presently we arrived at the school where Mark would do his presentation. We sat at desks with many other people and Mark's helpers began to pass out ads ripped from magazines and color catalogs; magazine layouts that were very provocative. I could see that there were certain forms that were subtly, yet powerfully, emphasized. No doubt about it, Mark had made a powerful argument with his collection.

At the front of the auditorium some sort of pantomime began. A lot of figures in theatrical dress began to act out a great battle with lots of swordplay and banner waving. Some effect of the light made the figures appear in tones of brown and amber. The action came to a stop and Mark announced that the entire scene was effected with new advances in video projection technology.

When the blacke crowes foote shall appeare in theyr eye or the blacke Oxe treade on their foote, when theyr beautie shall be lyke the blasted rose, theyr wealth wasted, their bodies worne, theyr faces wrinckled, their fyngers crooked, who will lyke of them in their age, who loued none in their youth? If you will be cherished when you are olde, be curteous while you be young.
