It's cat central out there, but I'm not going to go into it.

Yesterday I mopped the kitchen floor and I took the mop out in the backyard to rinse it out with the hose and looked down to where the faucet comes out of the ground by the barred basement window, and there, behind the bars was a real skinny but beautiful cat that looked a lot like TOMTOM, my parents' cat, trapped between the bars and the basement window. I guess GRAMPS or some other tough cat cornered her there, and in fear, she squeezed through the bars and got stuck. I don't know how long she was there; maybe a couple of days. She let me pet her. She was weak. When I figured out that she was stuck, I went into the basement and opened the window and brought her in and carried her out and let her go. I petted her a lot on the way, but she took off like greased lightning when she reached the backyard.

Well, this morning when I was sitting on the back steps parcelling out dry cat food to GRAMPS and SAFFRON and the three black kittens, I heard a meowing and looked up and there was that pretty kitty on the garage roof, hungry but afraid to come down, so I climbed the tree and petted her and put food on the roof and she hungrily ate it. One of the black cats climbed up there and chased her away, but a little later she came back and I climbed the tree again and gave her more food and this time the black cats were too lazy to bother her.

september note

Been collecting cicada shells from the backyard since August, when they finally appeared, this very wet summer.

Cicadas, called locusts in Texas, are loud, buzzing, winged insects, an inch or two long, that inhabit hot, dry, places. The first part of their life is lived underground. They spend between two and twelve years underground, depending on the species. Eventually, they emerge from the ground and suck tree sap until they outgrow their hard skin which splits along the back allowing an exit for the adult cicada, which continues to suck sap, mate, lay eggs and sing in the trees until departure time. They are big and loud.
